Venus Retrograde: Revisiting Love, Desire & the Shadow

"They say there is a doorway from heart to heart, but what is the use of a door when there are no walls?"

— 13th-century Persian poet, Islamic scholar and Sufi mystic Jalal al-Din Rumi

Some transits ask a great deal from us, while others simply ask us to pause, look back and reconsider what we have already lived. Retrogradation belongs to the latter. The apparent backward motion of the planets has been observed and interpreted since Antiquity, and in astrology it has long been associated with periods of reflection, revision and return.

This autumn, two of the personal planets, Venus and Mercury, will both turn retrograde, inviting us into a season of revisiting. Rather than pushing us towards what is next, these cycles can bring our attention back to what has already been unfolding — unfinished conversations, familiar patterns, old desires, and questions we may have thought we had already answered. While both retrogrades form part of this wider autumnal story, this article focuses on Venus retrograde, with Mercury's movement providing an occasional backdrop to the themes of reflection and reconsideration of Venusian themes.

When is Venus retrograde in 2026?

From 3 October to 14 November 2026, Venus — planet of love, relationships, pleasure, desire, attraction, values, money and self-worth — will move retrograde through Scorpio and Libra, turning our attention towards what needs to be reconsidered before we move forward.

It helps to think of a retrograde not as a single event, but as a longer process unfolding in three phases. The first is the shadow phase, when the planet is still moving forward but enters the part of the zodiac it will later retrace. This can introduce the themes that become more significant once the retrograde begins, bringing certain circumstances or questions into focus before the full process unfolds. The second is the retrograde itself, when the planet appears to move backwards and we are more directly confronted with whatever that particular retrograde is bringing to our attention. Finally, once the planet turns direct, we enter the third phase: a period of resolution, when we begin to integrate what has surfaced and put into practice whatever changes or insights have emerged.

For Venus in 2026, this means the story extends well beyond the familiar dates of 3 October to 14 November. The shadow phase began on 31 August, the actual retrograde lasts around 42 days, and the final phase of resolution continues until 15 December. The entire Venus retrograde loop therefore spans around 106 days — more than three months in which Venus passes through the same portion of the zodiac three times: first moving forward, then backwards, and finally forward again.

Venus retrograde 2026 and the 2018 echo

There is something particularly interesting about this Venus retrograde: Venus last followed this same path through Scorpio and Libra eight years ago, in autumn 2018. It is worth looking back at that period, as it may reveal to you a particular theme that has been developing in your life since then. What was happening in your relationships? Who were you drawn towards? What or who did you desire, and what were you willing to accept? How was your relationship to money and finances? Perhaps you were beginning or ending a relationship, learning something about intimacy or trust, or making important decisions around money, creativity and your values. Eight years later, a familiar theme may return in circumstances that allow you to see it differently.

Venus retrograde in Scorpio and the shadow

Venus begins this retrograde journey in Scorpio, where she remains until 25 October. This is the deeper part of the cycle, bringing our attention beneath appearances and into questions of intimacy, attachment, trust, vulnerability, desire and power. Whatever has been kept beneath the surface may begin asking to be seen. We may become more aware of where the give-and-take has become unbalanced, where fear of loss has influenced our choices, or where we have confused intensity with intimacy. At the heart of this period is a difficult but useful question: what do you actually desire, beneath what you have learned to settle for?

Pluto becomes particularly relevant here because, while Venus is moving backwards through Scorpio, she forms an exact square to Pluto in Aquarius on 20 October, bringing questions of power, control, attachment and what lies beneath the surface into sharper focus. Pluto can expose dynamics that have been operating beneath consciousness, while Venus brings those questions directly into the realms of love, intimacy, desire, values and self-worth. Who holds the power in a relationship? What has been kept hidden? Has trust actually been earned, or simply assumed? Where might you have surrendered something of yourself in order to maintain connection? These questions do not necessarily point towards an ending; sometimes they simply reveal where greater honesty is needed.

Venus is also a symbolic map of our desires, conscious and unconscious. What do you truly long for when you fall in love? What draws you towards another person, and what qualities do you find irresistible? More importantly, what do those qualities awaken in you? We are rarely drawn to someone by chance; they tend to arrive carrying something of our own, perhaps something that needs to be reclaimed. Another person may embody a quality we have not fully permitted ourselves to express, awaken a desire we have kept hidden, or reveal a part of ourselves that has been waiting to be recognised. Venus retrograde offers an opportunity to become more curious about that deeper story.

Venus retrograde in Libra: what happens when Venus turns direct?

On 25 October, Venus moves back into Libra, the sign she rules, where she remains until turning direct on 14 November. The atmosphere shifts. After the intensity of Scorpio, Libra brings us back towards reciprocity, balance, negotiation and the art of meeting another person without losing ourselves in the process. If Scorpio asks us to look beneath the surface, Libra asks what we are going to do with what we have discovered. Difficult truths may need to become conversations, old patterns may need to be renegotiated, and we may have to consider what a genuinely reciprocal relationship looks like.

Venus is traditionally considered to be in her dignity in Libra, making this second chapter quite different from her time in Scorpio. The emphasis moves from excavation towards integration: not simply understanding what is happening beneath the surface, but finding a way to relate to it with greater honesty and balance.

And this is where the tone of the season begins to change. Venus turns direct on 14 November and moves towards a sextile with Jupiter in Leo, exact on 28 November. After the intensity of the preceding weeks, there is something lighter here: more warmth, generosity and pleasure, a greater willingness to enjoy what is in front of us rather than continually examining it. Jupiter in Leo brings confidence and heart to the final stretch of the cycle, reminding us that reflection has its limits too. There comes a point when we stop looking back and allow ourselves to participate fully in what is beginning to open up.

What Venus retrograde means for love and self-worth

Perhaps the most important relationship to reconsider during this period is the one we have with ourselves. Venus retrograde can bring questions of self-worth into sharper focus: what do we believe we deserve, what do our choices tell us about what we value, and where have we abandoned our own needs in order to remain connected to someone else? Sometimes the work is not about asking another person to change, but about changing what we are willing to participate in. Sometimes what returns is simply showing us how differently we are able to choose now.

Although Venus turns direct, this does not necessarily mark the end of the process. She will continue retracing the degrees travelled during her retrograde until mid-December, giving us time to integrate what has surfaced and recognise what has genuinely changed. By then, the significance of the 2018 echo may be easier to recognise. You may see more clearly how much has changed in eight years, which patterns have lost their hold and which values have become more firmly your own.

Astrology can describe the larger landscape, but the birth chart shows where a transit becomes personal. The houses Venus is moving through, the aspects she makes to your natal planets and her relationship to your own Venus can reveal which areas of life are being revisited. For some, this may centre on relationships; for others, money, creativity, self-worth, pleasure or desire.

What matters is not simply what Venus retrograde means, but where it is asking you to look again.

Perhaps this autumn is not about finding something new, but about recognising what has been there all along — and realising that, after eight years of living, changing and becoming, you may be ready to choose differently…

If this autumn is asking you to look again, a Venus Retrograde Reading explores where Venus is moving through your own chart, what may resurface, and what could return for a second chance.
